Director’s Reels
Here are examples of some of the many newscasts or other shows I have directed. Some include director’s tracks.
KTVI/KPLR-TV Shows:
The “Eclipse” show serves as an example of how well I can direct live, unscripted programming. I worked with many others, from our helicopter pilot to the multiple live shots, coordinating with and ensuring that they had the needed information for their shots while leading the studio crew and talent through the show.
Post Scripts/Hancock and Kelley:
Hancock and Kelley/Post Scripts are my favorite kind of shows to direct – completely unscripted! These are political/news discussion shows that take a quick and talented director to put on the air, like myself. It takes a keen eye to keep up with the talent and make sure the video and audio matches what they are speaking about.
KOIN-TV Shows:
I helped to launch this newscast in September 2015. KOIN-TV had never attempted a weekend morning newscast, and I was the director of this show. I worked to set up new camera angles and add items to Ignite especially for this show.
This show continues as an example of my talents as a director. It doesn’t matter if it’s sports, news, or political programming – I can direct it and produce a clean show.
KOMU-TV Shows:
This show is a great example of my versatility as a director. The producer (Matt Kalish) made a point of going off-template with the previous night’s breaking news in play. This breaking news resulted in elements that might stress a director, such as 4+ live shots and live anchors. This didn’t stress me. I used all the effects that I could to enhance the show, such as file boxes. In addition, I was the photographer who shot all of the video from the scene the night before.
A good director is always on their toes, ready to handle change. As you’ll see in this show, when a reporter mis-transferred video, I was able to handle it on the fly and keep the show clean on air.
I try to be creative with my shows, so that I may do my part in keeping the viewer’s attention on our channel. In this show, you’ll see some of the custom shots and effects I have created, such as mapflies. I try and use all the elements of our set to keep the viewer’s attention.
I excel at directing extended shows. Here’s an example of that- KOMU 8 News at Ten, followed by Sports XTRA with Chris Gervino. The two shows are an hour long.
